Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking sounds (phonemes) and the symbols that represent them (graphemes, or letter groups). At SS Peter and Paul we use the Unlocking Letters and Sounds Phonics scheme to teach phonics.
Teaching children phonics starts on the first day of Foundation Stage and continues throughout their time in KS1. Some children may receive additional support in KS2 if they do not have a good knowledge of phonics.
The document below is a copy of the notes given out at a recent reading meeting and contains some information about how we teach phonics in school. There is also a link to a film clip which will help you to understand the sound each letter or group of letters make.
If you would like further information please feel free to ask your child's teacher.
